Located
in the Coimbatore district of the state, Tirupur is
one of the most important industrial centers of Tamil
Nadu. The town is situated at a distance of 448 kms
to the South-West of Chennai and at the intersection
70˚22’ Longitude and 11˚6’ latitude. River Noyyal, originating from the Velangiri Hills and flowing
through the city center in the easterly direction
and the Western Ghats on the near west, are the major
geographical features of this region.
Spread over an area of 27.19 sq. kms. Tirpur is the
second largest town in the district of Coimbatore.
With a population of over 3.51 lakhs, the economy
of the town revolves around the manufacture of hosiery
and cotton products.
The hot and dry climate prevailing in the region has
been one of the various factors contributing to the
growth of the hosiery industry in the town.

with road network system. Round the clock Rail and
bus facilities are available and there is direct rail
linkage to Delhi. Large numbers of Hospitals with
sophisticated equipments are located in the town.

ECONIMIC
BASE
|
The
economy of the town is concentrated around the cotton
trade and the hosiery products market.
The knitting industry of the town has grown about
5 times from 415 industries in 1971 to around 2500
units by the year 1989. The industry was able to net
a turnover of Rs. 2500 crores in 1994in comparison
to about Rs. 18 crores in 1984. A salient feature
of the Tirupur knitwear industry is the decentralisation
of the production process and some of the initial
processes are performed as household industry.
In terms of work force, the participation ratio has
increased from 35.8 % of the total population in 1971
to 37.22% in 1991. Of the work force the secondary
and tertiary sector constitutes 58.12% and 38.14%
respectively.
